Antonio Caetano de Abren Freire Egas Moniz

António Caetano de Abreu Freire Egas Moniz (born November 29, 1874, died December 13, 1955), pron. IPA: , was a Portuguese Neurologist. He was the first Portuguese to receive a Nobel Prize, "for his discovery of the therapeutic value of leucotomy in certain psychoses".
He was born in
Avanca, Portugal. He was the inventor of prefrontal leucotomy which was changed to lobotomy by American surgeons Walter Freeman and James Watts, who introduced a larger severing of the neural fibres. It was used as a surgical approach to the radical treatment of several kinds of mental diseases; one of the several types of psychosurgery. For this work, Moniz received the Nobel Prize in 1949, jointly with the Swiss neurophysiologist Walter Rudolf Hess.

Walter Rudolf Hess

A Swiss neurophysiologist, Walter Rudolf Hess (1881-1973) won the 1949 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine (with Antonio Egas Moniz) for discovering the role played by certain parts of the brain in coordinating the functions of internal organs.
The son of Professor Clemenz Hess, Walter Rudolf Hess was born at Frauenfeld, Switzerland, on March 17, 1881. In 1900 he became a medical student at the University of Lausanne, and after more study in Switzerland and Germany, he graduated from the University of Zurich in 1906. He became a practicing ophthalmologist, but in 1912 he turned to physiology. In 1917 Hess was appointed professor of physiology and director of the Institute of Physiology at the University of Zurich.

Marcello Barbieri

The idea that the genetic code is only the first of a long series of organic codes was proposed for the first time in 1985 in the book The Semantic Theory of Evolution. Since then, the experimental scenario has changed considerably and the arguments in favour of other organic codes have increased, making it necessary to add a second volume to that first book.

John Deely

John Deely (born 1942) is Professor of Philosophy at the Center for Thomistic Studies of the University of St. Thomas (Houston). He is one among many accomplished scholars at the Center.
His main research concerns the role of semiosis (the action of signs) in mediating objects and things. He specifically investigates the manner in which experience itself is a dynamic structure (or web) woven of triadic relations (signs in the strict sense) whose elements or terms (representaments, significates and interpretants) interchange positions and roles over time in the spiral of semiosis. He is currently (2006-2007) Executive Director of the Semiotic Society of America.

Claude Levi-Strauss

Claude Lévi-Strauss was one of the most influential anthropologists of the 20th century. The founder of Structuralism, Lévi-Strauss was also notable for his extensive field work among primitive tribes and his (Marxist-influenced) view that the customs and beliefs held by such tribes were in no way inferior to the customs and beliefs held by so-called civilized societies.

While other anthropological schools of thought focused on studying the history and material culture of primitive societies (describing their tools, weapons, homes, costumes) or on their social structures (politics, kinship, roles of men vs. women), Lévi-Strauss' Structuralism focused on the harder to define inner life of a society and its members. He attempted to describe systems of meaning and the ways in which these were expressed in a culture's mythologies and relationships of exchange (between individuals within the culture).

Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882)

The classic English country gentleman, Darwin seems an unlikely figure to create a controversy. He had developed a radical theory that brought him into conflict with a very traditional establishment – the Anglican Church. History has vindicated him and he is now celebrated as one of the greatest and most innovative scientists who ever lived. But, Alfred Russel Wallace, who hit upon the theory at the same time, has not received similar recognition.
To this day, Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection is widely accepted, and explains the distant origins and fantastic variety of life on Earth.

Musical Semiotics

Species to Observe -- Pig
